BASW and RiPfA unite on projects to improve social work practice

One of the reasons I chose social work as a profession is the way it constantly evolves to take on new challenges, skills and responsibilities. As much as we lead the way in person-centred care, we also react to the world around us, adapting our practice to reflect the way people live their lives now.

So, as populations live longer, in growing numbers and with greater cultural diversity, it’s more important than ever that our professional development keeps pace with our rapidly changing communities.

In support of this, new government funding has allowed the British Association of Social Workers (BASW) and Research in Practice for Adults (RiPfA) to launch two new projects which will develop our professional capabilities and continuous professional development (CPD) even further.

Ruth Allen, BASW’s Chief Executive, explains more in this guest blog…

Ruth: “These projects have been funded by the Department of Health and Social Care and will run from October 2018 to April 2019.

They offer new opportunities to improve support for some of the most vulnerable members of society.

The first project builds on the Capabilities Statement and a CPD pathway for social work with older people we developed in 2017.

This newly commissioned work will evaluate the framework’s use and embed it further within social work CPD and practice.

The second project creates a new Capabilities Statement and CPD pathway for social work with adults who have learning disabilities.

Both projects are underpinned by co-production between social workers and those who use services. This is about helping our wonderful profession maintain its focus on best practice grounded in human rights, shared values and empowered citizenship.

Ultimately, we want to improve practice for social workers, commissioners of social work and care organisations right across the health and care sector. The work with RiPfA is now underway and I’m excited by the benefits it will offer all of us seeking to deliver the very best practice we can.”
