Shantel Thomas

Shantel is the clinical professional lead for social work and course lead for the MA in social work (M23) at the Tavistock and Portman NHS Foundation Trust. She is also an independent training consultant, coach and mentor.

From March 2021 to May 2023, Shantel was the first UK anti-racism lead at the British Association of Social Workers (BASW).

She is a senior academic and a post graduate researcher at the University of Sussex, with a thesis entitled 'You Can't PhD your way out of Racism – What can an auto ethnographic study contribute to our understanding of race and leadership in white led organisations?’

October is an important month as it marks World Mental Health Day and Black History Month. These two themes were explored at a brilliant webinar on anti-racist perspectives and the Approved Mental Health Professional (AMHP) role.
